Calcium Questions

GH- General Hardness- measurement of calcium, magnesium, etc.

KH- Karbonate (Carbonate) Hardness- measurement of bicarbonate (HCO3-) and carbonate (CO32-) ions. These help buffer the water and prevent the pH from swinging. Binds to free H+ in the water.

pH- Measurement of H(ydrogen) potential or power, depending on the source you ask. If you don't know what this is, but your test kit stays around the number that's recommended for your fish, snails, inverts, etc., don't touch it.

How Do I Harden My Water?

Lowering GH can be tricky, and should only be done with purpose. We use dehumidifier water, others use RO (reverse osmosis) units. The cheapest way is to use distilled water, in moderation.

KH levels can give to how stable your pH is or will be. A low KH can lead to a rapidly decreasing (or swinging) pH level. A higher KH level can assist in maintaining a stable pH level.

Calcium carbonate can raise your KH, but it will also raise your GH with the calcium content.

Seachem products can help regulate levels.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can raise your KH without raising your GH, but in turn raises your pH. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) can achieve the same

These can change parameters fast, and will kill organisms if not done correctly.

Consistency is key. If your pH doesn't need to be touched, it shouldn't be.

If it needs to be raised, look at carefully raising the KH.

If it needs to be lowered, research natural remedies like indian almond leaves, driftwood, etc.

You may also research the use of RO water, dehumidifier water, or vinegar- research well and exercise caution. These can change parameters fast, and will kill organisms if not done correctly.
